29 May Statement on NYU Chapter
The leadership of Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc. is aware of the situation involving its undergraduate members at New York University and is currently working with the university to understand what happened.
The International Fraternity has placed the New York University chapter on an interim suspension, ceasing all normal activity and chapter functions pending further investigation.
The attitudes expressed by individual members of the New York University chapter do not reflect the values of the International Fraternity. The mission of Lambda Phi Epsilon is to guide men on a lifelong discovery of authenticity and personal growth and the International Fraternity is committed to helping its members live positive, healthy, and responsible lives. Racism has no place in that pursuit.
Lambda Phi Epsilon has the following anti-discrimination policy. “No chapter shall permit, nor any member engage in conduct that is inconsistent with the values of Lambda Phi Epsilon. The following represents a non-exclusive list of conduct inconsistent with those values: Content that would commonly be understood to be racist, sexist, demeaning to any minority or majority group, or generally in bad taste.”
As an organization that emphasizes cultural heritage as a core value, we call upon our members and community to reflect on the roots and expressions of anti-Blackness in their own lives. We stand in solidarity with the National APIDA Panhellenic Association against anti-Black racism. It is imperative that APIDA-identifying individuals not remain complicit or be passive bystanders when seeing racist actions or policies.
