09 Dec Fraternity Wins Elevation in Practice Award for Inclusion
The Association Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) announced that Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc. was named a 2024 recipient of the Elevation in Practice Award for Inclusion for their yearlong Courageous Conversations webinar series. This award was honored at the 2024 AFA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 6th, 2024.
The idea for the Courageous Conversations Webinar Series emerged from the organization’s recognition of the urgent need to address complex social issues within the fraternity and beyond. This new program was meticulously structured to develop emotional intelligence, cultural competence, anti-racism/courageous leadership, and authentic allyship among Lambda Phi Epsilon members to become more effective change agents within their chapter, council, and community.
The Lambda Phi Epsilon Board of Directors partnered with Omega & Alpha Solutions, LLC (Co-founded by Randy Dorian Brown Jr., M.Ed. of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Dr. Zduy Chu of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity) to create a brave space for members to engage in honest and transformative discussions about race, culture, and identity.
“Courageous Conversations provided an incredible opportunity for participants to explore the complexities of navigating culture through an emotional intelligence framework,” says Brown. Both Chu and Brown the growth of Lambda Phi Epsilon members by helping them identify and develop the essential skills needed for successful cross-cultural interactions.
Sessions were held quarterly over a year, ensuring consistent engagement and program continuity. The international fraternity leveraged virtual platforms to reach a wide audience of students from over 40 universities. The series informed and inspired members to take actionable steps toward creating a more inclusive and equitable society. “Witnessing Lambda Phi Epsilon being recognized for their courageous initiative to shape the world they envision is truly inspiring and encourages hope,” says Brown.
